Positive Behavior Support

Positive Behavior Support (PBS)

Positive behavior support (PBS) is a school-wide, behaviorally-based system to enrich effective environments in which teaching and learning occurs. Attention is focused on creating and sustaining school-wide, classroom, and individual systems of support that focus on positive reinforcement in an effort to improve the educational atmosphere for all children. In return, undesired behaviors are reduced because they are less effective, efficient, and relevant.

Why PBS?

Research has shown that the implementation of punishment, especially when used inconsistently and in the absence of other positive strategies, is ineffective. Teachers are expected to model, teach and reinforce the desired behaviors just as they would teach a core subject in class. Teaching expected behaviors and reinforcing them throughout the day is more positive than waiting for bad behaviors to occur and responding to them. PBS is used to not only decrease the undesired behaviors, but also prevent them from occurring.

La Luz PBS

La Luz Elementary uses the PBS system to help reinforce positive behaviors, and identify behaviors that need to be addressed and students that may need extra support. The La Luz mission statement, posted around campus, address students, staff, and community members what being part of this school will look like:

La Luz Leopards will increase student achievement by always being

                                        Proud Learners, having

                                        Awesome Attitudes, making

                                        Wise Choices and putting

                                        Safety First.

Collectively, these rules are known as the PAWS rules. Additionally, posters displaying the expected PAWS behaviors are exhibited throughout campus to remind students of appropriate behavior. Teachers are asked to distribute ‘Caught You Being Good’ tickets to students who are displaying the PAWS behaviors. Students can use these tickets at the end of every month to redeem prizes at the Leopard Store. Store items include pencils, pens, erasers, puzzles, bookmarks, and more. Students who purchase from the Leopard Store will also have their name entered in a trimester drawing to earn a bigger prize. The emphasis of the reward system is on earning the tickets by showing the suitable behaviors throughout the day and in the various school-wide settings.

PBS Consequences

Students who do not follow the PAWS rules will have consequences. After their first time displaying inappropriate behaviors, students will be reminded how to follow PAWS. This first step is considered their warning. If a student’s continues to act inappropriately, they will be given an Uh-Oh slip. The Uh-Oh slip is given to the student and is to be signed by a parent. Additionally, students who are given Uh-Oh’s are sent to the Reflection Room during their lunch. The Reflection Room is for students to reflect and remember their behaviors are inappropriate. They will have to fill out an additional PAWS reminder form to describe why they got their Uh-Oh slip. If a student continues to have inappropriate behaviors, they are given an office referral, and sent to the Principal.
